Who knew you could see snow in Southern California? I sure didn’t, which is why I was a little skeptical signing up for the “Palm Springs Tram Trip”, spearheaded by the one and only Melodie Butz. But because she’s my friend and roommate, I said sure! Sounds like an adventure.
And. It. Was.
On the Sunday morning after Second Degree, ten brothers piled into two cars and drove off to Palm Springs. Two hours later, we arrived and took a bus up to the visitor center where we waited for our tram, puffy jackets and gloves in hand. The tram ride was amazing! The slow rise up into the mountain gave us incredible views, and once we saw snow, we knew we were in for a fun afternoon.
Some brothers in the group had never seen snow before, but even for those who had, this mountain was like a winter wonderland. Our afternoon was filled with classic snow-day fun, and we all felt like kids playing in the snow. Amanda brought two sleds, so we all took turns going down hills and seeing who could make it the furthest. Then, we took a break for a short photoshoot to ensure everyone had a nice picture to send home to mom (or use as a new Facebook profile picture!) After that, we split into two teams and had a snowball fight for the ages. Some of us were perched up on tall rocks while others ran around on the ground, and no one was safe!!! The snow was the perfect consistency for snowballs, so the competition was fierce. In the end, I’m not sure if there was a winner or not… But eventually, we were soaked from sitting in the snow and thought it would be best to warm up and get some food.
As we were getting lunch at the cafeteria, it started to snow outside! Then, the light snow turned into a very brisk wind, and we all decided we were content with our time in the snow. When we got back to our cars, we made a quick stop in Palm Springs for milkshakes, because what trip is complete without milkshakes?
All in all, the Palm Springs Tram Trip was one of the coolest things I’ve done in SoCal, and probably one of the coolest things I’ve done anywhere! If you’re looking for a fun day trip, I highly recommend spending a day in the snow! Shoutout to Melodie for planning an amazing brotherhood event, and shoutout to all the adventurous brothers who shared this special day with me!
