Biography

Yeah, that’s right, I’m a Geography major, and I’m hoping to double in Economics. Best majors ever. I’m thinking about going into grad school, law, urban planning, public policy, or teaching. I like the Dodgers. A LOT! I bleed Dodger blue. I’m a nerd. If you need a book list, especially if you like current non-fiction stuff, then come to me! I really like to play sports with Psi…notably softball and basketball. Go IM sports!

By the way, I play tuba, and absolutely love it. I used to play baritone/euphonium (WOOT! Craziest instrument ever! Awesome parts to play, especially in marches by Sousa and King) in high school, but UCLA doesn’t march those for some indeterminate reason. But I’m really happy playing the tuba. Shout out to the coolest section in the marching band, the tuba section!

As far as school and academics are concerned, I do not like to narrow myself in one specific field. I prefer a broad education in the liberal arts and sciences, and I enjoy talking about almost any academic subject. I’ve always been good at Geography. For some reason, I have a really good sense of always instinctively knowing where North is. Can’t explain it—it just happened that way. As for the actual subject itself, the concept of how humans make the earth their home really facinates me. How has geographical variation dictated the course of human history, and how have humans sculpted the earth’s landscape and resources into a liveable environment? As for economics, trade-offs and the concept of choice really interest me. Production Possibility Curves and Supply-Demand Market Graphs are my friends, haha. What really interests me is when you integrate these two fields together. What is the geography of wealth, and how is wealth distributed around the world, and why? And how does geography affect economics, which in turn affects politics and society? In other words, what I’m interested in is how, advocated through the political process, to make the earth a better place through free-market capitalism (no, I am not a defender of rapacious corporations, lol), international development and trade, and overall economic and environmental sustainability, given geographic constraints. I am also interested in the geographic and economic framework of urban areas.

Other random stuff about me: I live with three other brothers: Alex Bergman, Michael Branson, and Ethan Mathews. I enjoy a nice, friendly game of Munchkin, the best card game ever. I really like to play Risk with the Brothers; that’s always fun. I also enjoy a nice clean game of Super Smash Brothers, where I play as Link. And I like playing drums in RockBand for PS3. People are obsessed with my hair, although I consider it pretty boring and conservative, if I may say so myself. I love talking politics. I am an avid Democrat. And finally, I can be a total goof (like during a boring Chemistry lecture, when I used to be a Chemistry major) or can be totally serious and level-headed. But often, more times than not, I blurt out random things that make people laugh, even though I was being completely serious.
